The Inner Life of Cats

Jiselle Ragno

Recently my family brought a ferril cat inside to live with us. He had been coming to our garage since the summer and we have been feeding it and letting it live in our garage. My mom told me that I could bring him to the vet so we got him in a crate and I drove him to Andover Animal Hospital. They gave him all of the shots required for his and my family's safety, and in 2 days he was allowed to come into our home. The vet had told us that nothing was wrong with him and that he is no older than 7-8 months. He was a little nervous at first but is slowly getting more comfortable around us. He even started to sleep in my bed every night.  (as seen below)

It has been about two weeks with him living with us and he is the most comfortable I think he's ever been. He loves sleeping in my warm, soft bed than wet, cold grass. His name is Matthew thanks to my little brother, but it is kinda growing on all of us as well as him.

The article that I read was all about cats and their characteristics. It was really cool to read especially since now I have a cat and am learning how they act. I learned that cats recognize their names very quickly which is true because even from before we took him in, my mom would yell "Matthew!" and he would come running out of the woods to see us. Another thing that I learned from the article is that cats are very different from dogs in a couple aspects. For example, we all know that dogs are super lovey and crazy, however, cats like to be calm and left alone. This was hard for me to learn since I've always had dogs but I am getting used to it. I always want to hug and squeeze him like I would to my dog but Matthew would just scratch me, which he has once. Lastly, I learned that cats are very agile. Matthew can jump up to so many things in my house: he can even jump up to my kitchen island! I think it is so cool that he can jump so high and far without being hurt. I used to hate cats but ever since I met Matthew I am learning to love them.

  1. I love this! Matthew is adorable. I've never owned a cat, but I can imagine wanting to hug and squeeze them like you said. It's cool how one cat that you took in changed your perspective on cats in general.
