The Pandemic and Jobs

The Pandemic and Jobs

by Elyse Sears

The pandemic has obviously had a huge impact on everyone in almost every aspect of our lives. The role of a daily routine through a job is one everyone took for granted, and so much has changed throughout the pandemic's course for everybody's lifestyle.

Since the pandemic began to spread, many have unfortunately lost their jobs. This means looking for work wherever they could find it, and for many, switching career paths, possibly delving into newfound interests or sadly, diverting from a passion just for the security of a job. Many in the performing arts industry lost their jobs in March due to the cancellation of thousands of shows, leaving them with no income and not a clue when their job could resume. The pandemic may leave us all in a different place than we thought possible because of the unexpected nature of this time.

The pandemic may have other lasting effects on jobs as well. Many people have begun to work from home, and may never return to work if this better suits their work lifestyle. Another affect according to CNN News is that women may begin to leave the workforce, due to lack of fitting jobs or pressure from their male coworkers, as well as not being able to go further in their careers, or even health concerns due to the pandemic. This would have a negative effect on the representation in the general workplace, and researchers hope that through the rest of 2020 women will come back to the workplace in full force.

The pandemic has also affected the unemployed, who may find it even harder now to get a job, and unemployment numbers have risen greatly due to large layoffs. The unemployed have also struggled with finding aid through the government, who can hopefully raise the number of jobs within the coming years and take back progress destroyed by the pandemic.

  1. Such an important topic. I think women may also leave because suddenly school aged children are at home and someone needs to be there for them. Since women still make less money than their male counterparts, there's a good chance the women will be the ones giving up their jobs to stay home. It's so wild that this is happening.
