COVID-19 cases rising among US children as schools reopen by- Dean Alkovic

In March of 2020, the government, the economy, the country shut down due to the spread of COVID-19. Thousands of schools across the U.S. were closed and students needed to quickly adapt to a new lifestyle of learning. However, as the media portrays it, today the virus rates are declining and schools are deciding to reopen and let kids learn in the classroom rather than online.

Since opening back up, children of all ages have drastically increased the number of COVID cases which is a huge concern in trying to control the spread of the deadly virus. According to the CDC, "Roughly two times more teens were infected than younger students." This is because teens are hanging out with friends more and going to sports compared to younger kids who have to do what their parents say. While children are less likely to get sick with the coronavirus, they can still spread the virus to their loved ones and potentially get them sick. In my own experience, before every practice I had to fill out a health questionnaire and my temperature was checked. Despite precautionary measures, kids on my football team contracted the virus and I ended up getting tested.

In the early months of school, schools are taking safety protocols by making every student wear masks, maintain social distancing, and students and teachers who come into contact with the virus are quarantined. In my school, teachers are required to complete questionnaires before coming on the campus. And as always, masks are required.

Overall, every kid deserves to have fair education and since this is very new, schools are trying their best to find the best possible way to teach their students!

  1. This was a risk that everyone was taking when schools opened. The hope is that they can keep the virus out of the schools and keep the kids in!
